Ferry Crossings

As an alternative to flying, Brittany Ferries offers 3 routes from the UK to northern Spain:

Portsmouth – Bilbao

Portsmouth – Santander

Plymouth – Santander

Plymouth – Santander is the shortest crossing (20.5 hours) and leaves Plymouth at 1545 every Sunday afternoon.

Portsmouth – Santander has two crossings per week, at 1715 every Tuesday and at 1700 every Friday. Both crossings take approximately 24 hours.

Portsmouth – Bilbao also has two crossings per week, at 1200 every Wednesday and at 2230 every Sunday evening. The Wednesday crossing takes approximately 24 hours but please note that the Sunday evening crossing takes 33 hours and involves 2 nights on board.

Brittany Ferries operates 2 ships on the northern Spain routes; ‘Pont Aven’ and ‘Cap Finistere’... Both are modern and comfortable with elegant surroundings, stylish bars and superb restaurants, not to mention their award-winning service and excellent on board facilities. In the evening there is generally cabaret entertainment on offer and during the day entertainers will keep your children amused. You can just sit back, unwind and enjoy the experience.

Please note that we cannot be held responsible should these timings change at any time.

Please click on car ferries for more information and to book your crossing.

The journey by car from either Santander or Bilbao is approximately 650 miles (depending of course on where in the Algarve you are travelling to) and takes approximately 9.5 hours driving time. 650 miles may sound daunting but the roads are excellent and you can travel at the speed limit which is 120 kph (75 mph) for most of the journey. It can be done in one stint if you have 2 drivers, but you may prefer to overnight en-route. The half way point is somewhere between Salamanca (a very beautiful Spanish city) and Caceres. There are numerous hotels en route and you can find them here by clicking on Hotels.

If you have a little more time on your hands, you may care to look at the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. This is the Port producing region and the scenery is breathtaking. Driving from Santander to the Douro Valley will take approximately 4 hours (245 miles) and there is a wide selection of places to stay. From the Douro Valley down to the Algarve is approximately 450 miles but from Porto it is motorway all the way. This could be an ideal start to your holiday, and with no air fares or car hire to pay for it may well be cost effective too.
