12. April

April

The weather should be getting warmer 20 – 25 degrees and therefore perfect for the first outings to the beach!

There may still be the occasional shower, which is good for the spring flowers and ensuring the beautiful countryside is green and fresh!

The Algarve countryside has fewer visitors, but it has a great deal to offer to anyone interested in wildlife, wildflowers and scenic beauty.

Twitchers should think about visiting in the spring and autumn when there is a wealth of migrants that pass through the Algarve. Birdwatchers and photographers alike will enjoy spending time at the many saltpans that exist along the Algarve coast, especially east of Almancil.

Try a visit to the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, Algarve to see the Bee Orchids, (Ophrys Apifera).

From the A22, turn off at the Olhao junction (Junction 14) and proceed south for approximately 8km towards Olhao. Upon reaching the roundabout on the N125 at Olhao, turn right and drive approximately 400m towards the Olhaos Centre and then turn left down Avenida Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. (There is a petrol station on this junction.) Proceed past a campsite and over a railway track, and about 1km further on is the entrance to the Parque Natural through large double gates on the left.

This is an ideal place for families. The paths throughout the reserve have hard surfaces which can easily accommodate prams and wheelchairs if there is a disabled person in the party.

In the main visitor centre there are drink machines and public toilets.
