*Golf Courses in the Algarve

Portugal’s southern Algarve region is blessed with more sunshine per year than California.  It is only a short flight from most European capitals and has been popular with golfers for many years. The area hosts a super coastline and spectacular scenery.

The main golf season is from autumn through late spring; with mild winters, golfers can enjoy warm sunny days, although during this season there is of course the occasional rain fall. It is a wonderful place for playing golf, whether you are an amateur or expert golfer. The Masters is played in Vilamoura every year and there are many other Championship courses to choose from.

It was the British who introduced golf to Portugal in the 19th century, when a group of British wine exporters formed Oporto Niblicks Club in 1890 ( renamed Oporto Golf Club in 1901). Sir Henry Cotton started the Portuguese golf boom with the Penina Championship  course which is the oldest in the Algarve dating back to 1966.

As a host to international competitions, and with quality hotels, excellent restaurants and lively nightlife the Algarve is the perfect choice for a golfing holiday.

Most of the top courses require a handicap certificate, so be sure to bring one with you.

Central Algarve - Golf

This area has a large concentration of courses.

The Masters is held each year at the Oceanico Victoria in Vilamoura.Oceânico’s jewel, was the most ambitious golf project in Portugal, and was aimed at being one of the best golf complexes in the whole of Europe. The Victoria Clube de Golfe is the fifth at Vilamoura and the most exclusive within the resort. It is set to become the Algarve's and Portugal's major venue for top international tournaments. Arnold Palmer, whose design company has planned some 500 layouts worldwide, compiled the Victoria course project, and Southern Golf, Europe's largest golf course builder, was awarded the construction contract. Several man-made lakes provide hazards for the players and also serve as water reservoirs for irrigation. Seasoned golfers will really enjoy this course.

Other golf courses to visit in the Central Algarve are Balaia Par 3, Laranjal, Oceanico Laguna, Millennium , Old Course, Pinhal, Penheiros Altos, Quinta Do Lago North and South, Salgados, San Lorenzo, Sheraton Pine Cliffs and Vale do Lobo Ocean and Royal.

Eastern Algarve - Golf

Monte Rei is a large luxury golf holiday resort set in the hills northeast of Tavira in the Eastern Algarve.

Benamor Golf Club was designed by Sir Henry Cotton back in 1986 (designer of Penina). The course is laid out on undulating land with pleasant views both to the Atlantic Ocean and the hills of the Serra do Caldeirão.

Castro Marim is on the very eastern edge of the Algarve (within minutes of the Spanish border) the course offers 27 holes arranged in 3 loops of 9 offering massive variety.

Quinta do Vale golf was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and including 6 Par-5´s, 6 Par-4´s and 6 Par-3´s. The resort is superbly integrated into the landscape and offers stunning views over the Guadiana River.

If you want to be surrounded by nature then the sister courses of Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima are the obvious choice, being beside the Ria Formosa Natural Park that is a haven for wildlife. The clubhouse and restaurant is converted from a farm building and has beautiful views of the greens as well as the surrounding area.

Other excellent courses in this area include, Costa Esuri and Isla Canela .

Western Algarve – Golf

If you’re looking to improve your game then Boavista, in Lagos, is a great place to play. Designed by major golf architect Howard Swan, the course is varied enough to keep players of all abilities on their toes, and you can also book golf lessons to work on your swing.

There are some good options for keen golfers within the Western Algarve, such as Penina Championship in Portimao, and the Oceanico Faldo course, which was designed by golf legend Nick Faldo. The best choice for families is Vale do Milho, with 9 holes including a very short 3rd hole of just 70 metres.

More fantastic courses are Alamos, Alto, Espiche, Gramacho, Morgado, Oceanico O’Connor, Palmares, Parque da Floresta, Penina Academy and Resort, Silves, and Vale da Pinta.
