Jim Stewart Tennis Academy

Welcome to the Tennis Academy!

"Yes" says Jim, "tennis for all - that's the message we're keen to put across."

Think of a sport that is very popular in the Algarve, has a club social scene and can be played by those well beyond middle age? Chances are you'll be thinking of golf.

But pay a visit to Jim Stewart's Tennis Academy (JSTA) in Quinta do Lago and you'll find a relaxed oasis, where people of all ages and abilities come together to enjoy not only the tennis but the social scene too. From juniors to those of retirement age, many are attracted to a sport that is fun, challenging - and provides great exercise.

It's a winning combination, and on any given day you'll find a real mix of ages and standards. On one court, one of Jim's coaches is instructing a newcomer on the basics; on the next a couple of talented youngsters are energetically slamming balls at each other; whilst on another a foursome of seniors are reaching the end of a friendly doubles - rounded off with some welcome refreshments at the bar.

JSTA offers play on more than 10 courts including EuroClay (clay-court), hard-courts and astro-turf. The Club also offers specialised clinics and tennis holidays. If you are around, please visit our well stocked Pro-Shop or alternatively take a look at our on-line shop.

The time between 16:00 and 17:00 is generally given to our Kids` and Schools` Programmes.

"Le Chef" is back....! Stewart is here to cook for us again!

Stewart Lindsey is back in the club as "Le Chef". Breakfast- and lunch/dinner menus are offered, featuring interesting dishes mixed-in with ol' favourite stuff.

Jim Stewart, Club Director and Supervisory Tennis Professional

Soren Hojbjerg, Business Development and Senior Resident Tennis Professional

Sören has been playing tennis since his early teens when fellow Scandinavian, Björn Borg, was his inspiration. Since moving to the Algarve in 2002, he has been playing regularly at the Jim Stewart Tennis Academy. PTR qualified tennis pro.

Tennis is just one of several sports that he took to proficient level over the years – notably soccer, handball, cricket, basketball, ice-hockey and volleyball. In more recent times he has excelled in martial arts, now holding Black Belts in Iaido and Aikido. His love of the sea is reflected in an enthusiasm for sailing and motor-boating.

Yet it was another element that dominated Sören's early years as, in an 8-year military career, he achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest officer with the Danish Royal Air Force. Nowadays, his feet firmly on the ground, he has become a father-figure to no less than 8 children, and is accustomed to nurturing kids with different needs and talents. As a tennis coach, Sören's specialisms include mental strength, bio-mechanics, match-tactics and equipment.

As much a multi-linguist as a multi-sportsman, Sören speaks English, Swedish & Scandinavian languages, German, some Dutch – and, as he says, 'just a little bit of Portuguese'...!

Zé Lopes, Tennis Development and Head-Tennis Professional

“Enthusiasm, hard work and fun, in equal measure!” – that's zestful Zé's recipe for tennis success. His passion is infectious, enthusing children and adults and with the sense of satisfaction and sheer enjoyment of the game.

Qualified to ITF / FPT Level 2, Zé coached for 7 years in his native city of Porto before heading south to run the Vilamoura tennis centre, then finally settling at Jim Stewart's.  As a junior player he was the national inter-club Under-12s champion. Nowadays he still competes at Futures ATP tournaments. At Jim Stewart's he is Club Captain for the Mens 35s, 45s and 55s teams; also for the Juniors Under-10s, U-12s and U-14s.

Zé has trained numerous national players from Portugal, UK, Ireland and Brazil, and is also proud to tell - albeit tongue-in-cheek - of a practice session once with John McEnroe: “He was one of my better sparring partners”...!

With a positive approach to life that embraces diverse pursuits such as surfing, rugby, yoga and fine arts, tennis is still Zé's real passion and vocation: “My ambition is to develop a player able to compete at ATP / WTA level.”

Tony Rocha, Tennis Administration and Senior Tennis Professional

Growing up in South Africa where sports and outdoors activities are a way of life, Tony is a sports all-rounder and enjoyed soccer, rugby, cricket, field and track athletics at both school and club level.

Returning to Portugal with his parents, he took a tennis diploma in 1994 followed by 6-months working part-time at Jim Stewart's. Despite moving on for several years, the experience proved to be a formative one, and Tony returned to JSTA  in 2001 where he has since become a mainstay of the academy. He also represents JSTA in inter-club tournaments for the Men's Over-35s B team.

Attaining his PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) in 2002, he nowadays coaches all levels at JSTA and also assists at pre-tournament level. As Academy Manager he is responsible for booking players into tournaments and overseeing the on-going maintenance of the courts. Tony is also qualified coaches of Padel Tennis at JSTA.

Hana Tkadlecova, Customer Service Manager

Hana is JSTA's welcoming front-of-house face, her role covering all activities in the daily running of the academy: organising bookings, coaching schedules, shop sales - plus behind-the-scenes administration.

From the Czech Republic, Hana studied Human & Social Sciences at university in her homeland but came to Faro University in 2008 as part of a student exchange programme. After graduating, the lure of the Algarve's sunshine lifestyle proved too strong to resist, so she settled and joined the tennis academy, where her calm assurance and winning smile has made her an integral and focal part of the team.

Min Spieres, Accounting Assistant

A long-time resident of the Algarve, with broad experience in retail and business accounts, Min is responsible for the Accounts & Administration at JSTA.

Although only working at the Academy on a part-time basis, nonetheless Min is up with the larks at 6am every morning, as a dedicated practitioner of yoga – which in the case of a woman, she informs us, is known a 'yogini'....

It is perhaps this inner calm that is Min's inscrutable secret in keeping the books balanced...?

Rosanne Smith, Programmes Manager

Nuno Delfino, Senior Resident Tennis Coach

Nuno is quite simply 'The Champ' at JSTA, having won no fewer than 24 national titles since the age of 35. His list of successes speaks for itself -

He coaches all ages and levels, developing mental discipline along with solid technique. Nuno has sparred with many of the game's greats, particularly at the annual Grand Champions event in Vale do Lobo. John McEnroe, Thomas Muster, Michael Stich, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Goran Ivanišević and the genial Henri Leconte are among the names that Nuno casually calls to mind.

Roque Rocha, Tennis-Coach

A recent addition to the coaching staff, Roque is qualified to Portuguese Federation FPT Level 2 and is now gaining internship experience at JSTA, where he coaches all ages and levels of ability.

Albufeira-born, Roque took up tennis at just six years of age, and has been playing competitively since aged eight. His talent for the game flourished throughout his teens and saw him playing regularly at national level. Now in his early 20's, he is ranked at No.8 in Portugal for 2012 and plays at national tournament level, reaching the quarter-finals of the Portugal Championships held in Guimarães, and has defeated several players ranked above him.

Set on a career in tennis coaching, Roque is ready to roll !
